5 Items I Recently Got for Free

5 Items I Recently Got For Free

This is a fun little post about FREE items. And who doesn’t love free?! I recently realized that we had acquired a number of free items in unique and not-so-unique ways. I thought it would be fun to share with you what we got and how we got it. Perhaps you will be inspired to add a few things to your life without spending any money!

2 Outdoor Chairs

free3

Our town has a swap shop that is located next to our transfer station. It’s open 2 days a week, and town residents are welcome to bring unwanted items and take desired items. We like to stop by and see what items are available. After a recent visit to the shop, my husband came home with 2 small adirondack chairs. We have 5 adult-sized chairs, so these were a nice addition. It’s not really something I would have paid money for, but when he found them for free, they were just the right price!

2 Bedside Lamps

free1

I have been wanting to replace the lamps that my husband and I each have on our bedside stands. I wasn’t really in a hurry, though, because I wasn’t sure what I wanted. I also didn’t want to pay a lot of money. A neighbor had a yard sale a few weeks ago. We drove by when they were selling, but nothing caught our eye. After the sale was over they put free items out for passerbyers to peruse and take. We decided to stop and see what was available. We were very excited to come upon 2 matching lamps! They were a bit dusty, but with a little cleaning, they were good as new!

A Desk

free4

My daughters have been wanting to add a desk to their room because they generally just do their school work at the dining room table. We were certainly making do, so I wasn’t rushing to buy one. When my kids mentioned to their grandparents that they were looking for a desk, my mother-in-law shared that her childhood desk was available. They kindly passed it along to us, and we painted it a fun color! My girls are happy to be enjoying their nana’s desk now with an updated color!

A Desk Chair

free5

The girls’ new desk was in need of a chair. We used one of our dining rooms chairs while we figured out what we wanted to do. I considered looking online, but I just wasn’t sure what would really look best. I was hoping for a nice sturdy chair with character. My husband mentioned to me that he saw a possible chair when driving by a church yard sale one Saturday morning. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get out to check on it that afternoon. Then we ended up going for a drive later that evening, and what did we discover? Yes, we discovered the freebies…including the chair! This antique chair looks perfect with their new-to-them desk!

A Fleece Jacket

free2

I have slowly been overhauling my closet, trying to carefully consider what I really like/enjoy wearing/look good in, etc. It’s definitely an ongoing process. I don’t like to overbuy when it comes to clothes, so I generally keep a running list of items I am looking to add to my wardrobe. I had been wanting a fleece jacket, but it really was more of a want than a need. When I discovered a $10 off code with thredUP, I stumbled upon a great Old Navy Fleece and scooped it up! I happened to have free shipping at the time, so this fun new-t0-me item cost me a whopping $0!!!!

Put Down Your Phone & Do 1 of These 5 Things This Weekend

Put Down Your Phone & Do 1 of These 5 Things This Weekend(2)

(This post contains affiliate links, so thenotsobusymom receives a very small commission if you make a purchase through the links. Thank you for supporting the blog!)

If you feel like you’re constantly drawn to your phone but are having a strong desire to put it down more, this is the post for you!

Our phones can and do have a place in our day-to-day lives. They provide information and connection. But we also know they can be consuming and time-wasting.

I have been trying to be more thoughtful and purposeful about putting down my phone. As we think ahead to the weekend, I wanted to share some phone-free alternatives with which to fill your weekend!

Here are my 5 ideas:

Read a Book

Many people say they don’t have time to read. I think if we have time to scroll our phones then we probably have time to read. This is an area I personally get tripped up on. I will often have a book laying right next to me, but then I choose to pick up my phone instead.

This weekend I encourage you to start a book or maybe finish the book that has been sitting on your bedside stand for the last few weeks.

I just finished Marilla of Green Gables last week, and I absolutely loved it. I am currently reading Restart (a middle grades book), and I hope to be starting What Falls From the Sky in the next few days.

I Didn’t Reach My Reading Goals, but Here’s What I Did Read

Quick Tip: Use Audio books to End Car Squabbles

Tackle a Project

Household projects are endless, and sometimes our phones keep us from starting or finishing a project that’s been on our to-do list forever. Put down the phone this weekend, and tackle that project. I’m always so surprised by how much can be accomplished in a short amount of time if I eliminate distractions (like my phone).

One ongoing project that I hope to continue this weekend is my master closet. I have been organizing and editing my wardrobe. This has been a long process and project, but I am making progress.

What project have you been trying to start or finish for awhile now? Even just 15 or 30 minutes of uninterrupted time can be beneficial.

Take a Walk

It’s a beautiful time of the year to get outside and explore. Walking is good for the body, soul, and mind. Walk with your family. Walk with a friend. Maybe you just need a quiet walk alone.

I try to walk 2 or more miles a day whenever possible. I generally like to spend some of the walk in quiet (so I can think and pray), and then I also take some time to listen to some of my favorite podcasts. ( I do realize you have to pick up the phone to listen to a podcast, but it’s not social media so there’s that….)

3kids

A few of my favorite podcasts:

The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey

The Crystal Paine Show

Cultivating the Lovely

Reconnect with a Friend (or 2)

Friendships can easily get neglected because of the busyness of life. Take some time this weekend to connect with a friend. This could be accomplished in a number of ways. Ask a friend out for coffee. Meet a friend and her kids at the neighborhood playground. Invite a few friends over for dessert. Even a simple gesture or activity of re-connection will benefit both you and your friend.

Rest

Rest. Yes, I said the “R” word. It’s an important word that is often neglected in this day and age. People see rest as unproductive and often unnecessary. I find rest to be one of the most important things I can do for me.

Resting does not necessarily mean sleeping; although getting appropriate sleep is important. Resting can be napping, putting your feet up, or just spending time ignoring the “to-dos” for an afternoon.

Don’t ignore rest; embrace it… starting this weekend!

What about you? What will you do this weekend instead of spending time on your phone? I’d love to hear your ideas, so drop them below.

Until next time,

3 Ways To Be Less Busy Outside Your Home

3 Ways to Be Less Busy Outside Your Home

(This post contains affiliate links, so thenotsobusymom receives a very small commission if you make a purchase through the links. Thank you for supporting the blog!)

When considering ways to make your life less busy, I have shared that it is helpful to look at two big areas of your life: life inside & life outside your home.

I’ve already tackled life inside the home in a prior post. You can find it here.

But what about life outside the home?

How can we lessen the load? How can we free up space on our calendar? How can we make life less busy outside our own 4 walls?

Today I’m sharing 3 ways to be less busy outside your home.
Edit Your Child’s Extra-Curricular Calendar

I recently wrote a post about my advice when it comes to extra curricular activities. A child’s calendar can quickly fill up and overflow. And that means your calendar can quickly fill up and overflow.

IMG_5449

If you want to be less busy outside your home, some calendar editing will probably have to occur. It won’t be easy. It might even come with some pushback, but I think the outcome will be worth it.

Extra-curricular activities are good and have their place. But you know what also needs a place in your child’s life? Space. Breathing room. Opportunities for play.

A quick and intentional edit will begin the process of making your life just a little less busy.

Streamline & Eliminate Errands

I know people who could make a part-time job out of running errands. Truly.

If you love running errands, great! But there is some simple streamlining and elimination that can be done to make errands an every once-in-awhile instead of an all-the-time.

Sometimes we run errands simply to fill our time, in order to avoid quiet, or to just get out of the house. Running errands is often necessary, but if it fills your days more than it should, consider some simple changes.

Ideas to consider:

Practice the Art of Saying No

The options available to fill your time are endless. Opportunities to say yes, to sign up for this, and to be a part of that are everywhere.  A lot of this can be good, meaningful, and important, but that doesn’t mean it’s all for you to do.

When you know your priorities and desire to live a full life (with less of the busy) then you are more aware of the importance of your yeses and your nos.

mom&baby

Don’t be afraid to say no. Don’t be worried about not being a part of something. Don’t be concerned about what everyone else is doing.

An intentional no can bring a lot of freedom, space, and calm into days (weeks and months) that can easily get out of control with plans and commitments. An intentional no can make life a little less busy outside your home.

What about you? How do you make life less busy outside the home? I’d love to hear your thoughts, so please drop a comment below!

My Five Favorites (March 2019)

My 5 Favorites ~ March 2019

March is quickly coming to a close, so it’s time for a favorites post. I actually have not done one of these in a very long time. I have missed sharing the things that make my life easier, better, or just plain fun, so I decided to get back at it this month!

Joy Mangano Little Steamer

As much as possible, I try to buy clothes that don’t need much ironing. For years, if I did need to get wrinkles out, I would often just toss my clothes in the dryer. My new favorite way to release wrinkles is with the Joy Mangano Little Steamer. I absolutely love the ease of a steamer, and it truly does the job well!

Oral B Electric Toothbrush

A couple years ago my dental hygienist suggested I switch from a manual brush to an electric toothbrush. For some reason, I put off her suggestion as long as possible. Then my son won an electric toothbrush in a raffle, and after seeing how well his worked, I decided it was time to finally get one. I love how clean my teeth feel after every brush. They are also whiter and brighter, so I’m hooked on my electric toothbrush now. I probably should have listened to my hygienist from the start!

Joy Mangano Huggable Hangers

As I’ve spent time editing my wardrobe, I’ve also looked for simple ways to clean and organize my physical closet. I have been wanting to buy nicer hangers for awhile, so this past Christmas I received the hangers I had been eyeing. Huggable Hangers keep my clothes from slipping onto the floor of my closet. They are also thin, allowing for more space within the closet. My closet is more streamlined and organized, and I like the way it looks when I go to pick out my clothes each day!

The Finest Hours by Michael J. Tougias & Casey Sherman

For 5 weeks I have the privilege and joy of being a long-term substitute teacher in a 6th grade English Language Arts class. The Finest Hours (young reader’s edition) was the book and literature unit they were reading/studying while I was subbing. I had seen the movie over a year ago, but I had never read the book. I was so very happy to get to read and dig deep into this true story of heroism that took place off the shores of my home, Cape Cod.

Old World Home (YouTube channel)

I have several YouTube channels that I enjoy watching. I enjoy channels that share, encourage, and inspire me as a wife and mom. One of those channels is Old World Home. I appreciate Hilary’s attitude and ideas. She strives to live well and has created a home that is simple and beautiful. Give the channel a visit; I think you might just enjoy Hilary and her channel, too!

Not So Busy Is Not Really About The Not

Rustic Furniture(1)

(This post contains affiliate links, so thenotsobusymom receives a very small commission if you make a purchase through the links. Thank you for supporting the blog!)

As a reader and follower of this blog, you might be wondering if there is a special formula for creating a not so busy life. Perhaps you’re hoping there is a special formula. A formula would certainly make things easier.

Maybe something like:
1 child + 1 sport + 1 instrument= a happy, less busy family
or
no extracurricular activities + lots of outside time = a full life

IMG_8830

No Special Formula

But there is no special formula. I can’t give you an equation to make your life less busy.

Remove this activity. Say no to this specific event. Don’t do this. Avoid all of that.

No, that won’t help…or at least it won’t help long-term.

You see, when it comes down to it, not so busy is not really about the not.

Does that prior statement make you scratch your head? Let me explain.

What You Don’t Choose

What you choose not to do does have it’s place. I certainly encourage moms to make life simpler and eliminate the unnecessary. I truly believe less is more. I want you to consider areas you might be over-extending, over-spending, and over-stressing. I think saying no to a lot of extras and a lot of the unnecessary is good and important.

Check out these posts for more on that:

My Advice When It Comes to Extracurricular Activities

One Simple Thing You Can Do to Make This School Year Less Busy

Are You Looking to Make Life Less Busy? Consider These 2 Areas

IMG_8068

What You Do Choose

But I think, even more importantly, it’s what we DO choose that really matters.

What are you saying yes to?

How are you filling your days?

What pursuits, passions, and priorities are shaping your years?

How we fill our days, our months, and our lives is what truly shapes and molds a not so busy life. When you focus on what does matter and when you choose the important, the nots and the nos take a back seat to the yeses.

In My Own Life

In my own life I want to (simply put) love God and love others. I want to say yes to connection and deep relationships with the people around me. I want to treat life as the gift it is and live it to the full.

When I am aware of my priorities, I can live them out. I know what I want to fill my life with. I know how I want to spend my time. I know how I want my calendar and my schedule to look.

As you consider more deeply the not so busy life, think less about what you’re eliminating and more about what you want to include and add to your life.

With each passing day, the important becomes even more clear.

What about you? What do you think about the not so busy life? How are you choosing to fill your days? I’d love to hear, so drop a comment below!

I Didn’t Reach My 2018 Reading Goal, but Here’s What I Did Read

I didn't reach my 2018 reading goal, but here's what I did read

It’s easy to feel a little disappointed when you don’t reach a goal (or at least it’s easy for me). Last year I set a goal of reading 25 books in 2018 (2 a month plus 1 bonus book). Instead, I read 19 books. Again, I could feel a little disappointed and discouraged that I missed the mark, but really, a goal is meant to motivate. I was motivated to read, and I did read. I read many great, memorable books.

IMG_7454(1)

I realize that the number 19 might seem quite low to many of you. Perhaps it seems high to others. I actually feel it’s a little low for me, but I find that although I love to read, because I am a blogger, I read a lot that isn’t found in books. I read other blog posts, website articles, social media posts, etc. It’s part of what I do to connect and grow as a blogger. Because of this, the number of books I read has decreased.

(This post contains affiliate links, so thenotsobusymom receives a very small commission if you make a purchase through the links. Thank you for supporting the blog!)

I didn’t reach my goal, but here are the 19 books I did read in 2018.

Non-fiction

Every Good Endeavor by Timothy Keller

Meet the Frugalwoods by Elizabeth Willard Thames

One Beautiful Dream by Jennifer Fulwiler

Chasing Slow by Erin Loechner

Uninvited (audio) by Lysa Terkeurst

The Road Back to You by Ian Morgan Cron & Suzanne Stabile

Reading People by Anne Bogel

library

Fiction

How Sweet the Sound by Amy K. Sorrells

Then Sings My Soul by Amy K. Sorrells (*I just read that this book has a release date of April 2019; I think they must be re-releasing it.)

Beneath the Night Tree by Nicole Baart

Miracle in a Dry Season by Sarah Loudin Thomas

Crenshaw (middle grades, audio) by Katherine Applegate

No One Ever Asked by Katie Ganshert

Rain, Reign (middle grades) by Ann M. Martin

The Art of Losing Yourself by Katie Ganshert

A Long Walk to Water (middle grades) by Linda Sue Park

Before We Were Yours (audio) by Lisa Wingate

Against the Tide by Elizabeth Camden

Twelve Days of Christmas by Debbie Macomber

My Favorites

I always enjoy reading a mix of nonfiction and fiction. I would highly recommend all the nonfiction books I read this year. If I had to pick favorites, I’d probably choose Meet the Frugalwoods and The Road Back to You.

Choosing fiction is always a little harder for me. I am a highly sensitive reader, so I have to be careful about my reading choices. That being said, I would say about half of the fiction I read did tackle some tough subject areas including: rape, abuse, childhood trauma, racism.  I was willing to tackle those important topics even if it was somewhat hard to read. None of the books were so explicit that I couldn’t finish a chapter or the book itself. If I had to pick two favorites, I’d choose Before We Were Yours and Rain, Reign.

IMG_6547

A few final thoughts

You’ll almost always find middle grade books on my book list. I was a fifth grade teacher before staying home with my kids, so I am always drawn to these types of books. If you’ve never picked up a middle grade book, I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

I also enjoy audio, so I often pick a few books to listen to each year. I love listening to a few chapters while taking a walk or doing household chores. I generally listen to audio through the Libby app, an app for library ebooks and audiobooks. I’ve also listened through Audible, too. If you haven’t signed up for the 30 day free trial, it’s worth it. You get 2 audiobooks + 2 Audible originals. It’s easy to cancel after the 30 days or continue the service for $14.95/month.

My reading goal for this year is (once again) 25 books. I believe I’ll get there!

What about you? What memorable books did you read in 2018? I’d love to hear your suggestions, so drop a comment below!

Until next time,
Charissa
